However, the experienced meditator soon discovers that, just as in everyday life, the mind is constantly active. Thoughts arise, stories unfold, and an inner commentary continues. In fact, many people report that until they begin meditating, they were largely unaware of just how much mental chatter was taking place.

Once this becomes apparent, the natural reaction is to try to suppress the chatter, believing that meditation should lead to a blank, silent mind. Yet this is a misunderstanding of what meditation is really about. Meditation is not the pursuit of silence; it is the cultivation of awareness. It is about being fully awake and in tune with reality, aware of our thoughts, feelings, emotions, and physical sensations as they arise.

Developing this awareness is an art. It is easy to become swept away by the stream of thinking, forgetting that we are meditating at all. Before we know it, we are replaying old conversations, imagining future scenarios, or following whatever story the mind has presented.

The key is not to fight the thoughts but to notice them. Allow them to come and go, whether they appear as words, images, memories, or plans. At the same time, remain aware of the world around you and of your own experience in the present moment.

The true measure of meditation is not the absence of thought, but the presence of awareness. The mind may continue to chatter, yet freedom arises when we no longer need to follow every word it says.

Just a word about the very clothing that might make your meditating journey more enjoyable and thought full – check out the the range of gear available at: www.nirvanaminds.com and look for mediation clothing – new products coming on line all the time.

When one first starts a meditation practice, it is often assumed that silence is golden.
